Vented and unvented cylinders
A vented cylinder gets its water from a tank in the loft. Gravity sets the pressure, so showers can feel weak. However, an unvented cylinder connects to the mains and gives stronger flow.
Unvented cylinders need extra safety parts and a qualified installer, because they hold hot water under pressure. Approved Document G (G3) expects a competent person to fit them. The work must go through building control or a competent person scheme, as GOV.UK explains.

Common cylinder faults
Lukewarm water can mean a faulty thermostat or a failed immersion heater. Hot water that runs out fast may mean the cylinder is too small. A leak from the cylinder itself usually means a replacement, although a leaking joint nearby may be an easy fix.
