The short answer
Two UK guides put a new combi boiler at roughly £1,200 to £4,500, supplied and fitted. System and regular boilers cost about the same or more. Typical installed prices sit around £2,400 to £3,800, because the model and the pipework vary.
These are UK guides, not our prices. Ask for a written quote through the request form, since every home differs.
Price ranges by boiler type
MyJobQuote gives these ranges for supply and fitting, while the model changes the final bill.
- Combi boiler: about £1,200 to £4,000.
- System boiler: about £1,100 to £4,000.
- Regular boiler: about £1,750 to £5,500.
It gives an average of about £2,400. ExpertSure puts a combi installed at £1,500 to £4,500, with typical prices of £3,000 to £3,800. The two sources differ. Still, the overlap is a fair guide.
What changes the price
Several things move the figure up or down, so list yours.
- The make and model of the boiler.
- The output you need for your home.
- Whether you swap like for like or change type.
- New pipework, a new flue or a new controller.
- Extras such as a filter or a smart thermostat.
A like-for-like swap is usually the cheapest route. Changing from a regular boiler to a combi takes more work, since the tanks and pipes change. ExpertSure says that job takes longer than a straight swap. Ask your installer for a time.
Repair or replace?
Age and fault history matter. ExpertSure says a single major repair can cost £300 to £500. Many guides suggest replacement gives better value beyond that. However, the age and efficiency of the boiler decide it.
Before you decide, check the basics. A drop in pressure can be a small fault, so our boiler pressure guide lists the safe checks. An error code does not always mean a new boiler, as boiler fault codes explains. If the radiators have cold spots, read what each cold spot means first.
Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer
The Health and Safety Executive says gas work in a home needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. Its domestic gas FAQ explains how to check the ID card. Our engineers are Gas Safe registered, so you can ask to see the card.
HSE also advises an annual service, while it strongly recommends a carbon monoxide alarm. Our guide to carbon monoxide at home explains the signs and what to do.
Grants
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant for heat pumps and biomass boilers. GOV.UK says it covers England and Wales. A new gas boiler does not qualify, although rules can change. Read the scheme page for the latest.
Other costs to plan for
A boiler is only one part of a heating budget. A stored hot water system may need a new cylinder. The hot water cylinder cost guide shows typical prices. A new bathroom can also raise demand on your boiler, so see the bathroom fitting cost guide.
If the hot water has stopped, read no hot water: what to check before you buy anything. Landlords have extra duties, so read our landlord plumbing checklist. Buyers should check the boiler age too, because a pre-purchase CCTV survey covers only the drains. Shops and flats follow similar rules, so see commercial plumbing in Northampton. A heating leak is urgent, and the signs of a burst pipe explain what to look for.
How to compare quotes
Ask for each quote in writing. Check that it names the boiler, the output, the flue and the controls. Ask what the price covers and what costs extra. Ask which warranty comes with the boiler and with the labour.
Our guide on how to choose a plumber lists more checks. A low quote that leaves out pipework can still cost more in the end.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a boiler fit take?
It depends on the job, since a like-for-like swap is usually quicker than a change of type. Ask your installer for a time.
Is a new boiler worth it?
It depends on age, repair costs and efficiency. If repairs keep rising, replacement may give better value, yet a small fault may not justify it.
Can I get a grant for a gas boiler?
No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not cover new gas boilers.
